Important Reminder
We will be having a cumulative sight word test in which your scholar will need to correctly read all 127 sight words we have learned so far this year.  This test will take place on Tuesday, February 19th.  Please help your scholar study the flashcards that were sent home last week.

Upcoming Events
February 14th- Valentine’s Day Celebration
(Please bring valentines and treats!  There are 27 students in our classroom.  A class list with students’ names is provided on the back of this newsletter!)
February 15th- No school.  Professional development day.
February 18th- No school.  President’s Day.

What We’re Learning
Comprehension: We have just launched our Junior Great Books discussions and they are a huge success!  Scholars have been learning how to read critically, mark their text to track their thinking, and share their thoughts in a conversation with their classmates.
Word Study: We are continuing our work with blends.  In grammar we are learning about contractions.
Writing: We are beginning our persuasive writing unit.
Math:  We are currently working on identifying and counting coins and money.  We are also reviewing time, calendar, and times of day.

Six Flags Reminder
Six Flags Read to Succeed reading logs are due on Thursday, February 14th.  Please ensure that the reading logs are complete and sent to school in your scholar’s binder.  Remember, six hours of recreational reading equals a free ticket to Six Flags!

MAP Reminder
Map testing will be here in a few short months!  Please remember to continuously review skills we have taught your scholar in order to ensure their success on their final round of MAP testing.  If you would like any review materials please e-mail Ms. Klemenz at gklemenz@learncharter.org.

What We’re Learning
Comprehension: We are continuing our unit on inferences.  We have also introduced predictions!  Both inferences and predictions require scholars to use what is in their text and what is in their schema to make a logical guess about an element of the story.  We are also studying character traits.
Word Study: We are continuing our work with blends.  In grammar we are learning about proper nouns, singular nouns, plural nouns, and proper capitalization habits.
Writing: We are continuing our writing fiction unit.
Math:  We are continuing working on time, calendar, and times of day.  Homework will consist of a review of previous chapters.

Boxtops Reminder
Our classroom is collecting Boxtops for Education!  Ms. Klemenz and Ms. Betts will reward the scholar who turns in the most boxtops in Quarter 3 with a prize from our treasure box!  Boxtops can be found on food products, paper products, and other supplies from grocery and general stores.  Thank you for your support!
